Harvard Instructor Series on IR: Dr. Bojana Coulibaly and Atrocity Prevention and the Complex International Facets of Genocide

Join us as we discuss Atrocity Prevention and the Complex International Facets of Genocide with Dr. Bojana Coulibaly, African Language Program Manager at Harvard’s Department of African and African American Studies. Dr. Coulibaly’s research focuses on African history and political thought, conflict discourse analysis, and atrocity prevention.

She will help participants understand the complexities of genocide, conflict discourse analysis, and atrocity prevention during peace and security decision-making.

This discussion is open to members of the public as well as all Harvard students and Harvard affiliates.

Join us on a private tour of the Military Women's Memorial

The Harvard Extension Student International Relations Club in conjunction with the Military Women's Memorial (www.womensmemorial.org) is hosting a private guided tour of the Military Women's Memorial museum and exhibits.

This tour is open to all Harvard affiliates, alumni & invited guests. The tour will begin promptly at 12:00PM (noon) on Sunday, April 16, 2023 and will be capped at a maximum of 25 people. Confirmed registrants will be sent information regarding location, parking, and security.

Rasha Abousalem

Rasha Abousalem: Unaccompanied and Unheard

Past HESIRC Vice President Rasha Abousalem ALM ‘22 has been carrying out international humanitarian aid work since 2014, bringing support to refugees and those in need across Jordan, Greece, France, Bangladesh, India, Colombia (indigenous communities), Puerto Rico and Bosnia. She funds projects by raising money through on-line donation sites, private donations, presentations and speaking engagements. She has also been contracted by US-based NGOs providing medical and humanitarian aid and has had in-field collaborations that include a wide variety of governmental and non-governmental actors, as well as state and military officials.

She will be presenting her thesis "Unaccompanied and Unserved: The Sexual Exploitation of Unaccompanied Boys in Refugee Camps and the Limitations of SGBV Conversations" on April 18th from 5:00PM-6:00PM CST at the University of Missouri, USA in-person and on Zoom.

“National Arab American Heritage Month was recognized in April 2021 by President Joe Biden, with the U.S. Department of State, some members of Congress and 37 governors issuing proclamations supporting the month. Arab American Heritage Month recognizes the achievements of Arab Americans. Across the country, cultural institutions, school districts, municipalities, state legislatures, public servants, and non-profit organizations issue proclamations and engage in special events that celebrate Arab American community’s rich heritage and numerous contributions to society.”

Global Observances

April 2nd: World Autism Awareness Day

World Autism Awareness Day is an internationally recognized day annually on April 2, encouraging Member States of the United Nations to take measures to raise awareness about autistic individuals throughout the world. It was designated by the United Nations General Assembly resolution, passed in council on November 1, 2007, and adopted on December 18, 2007. It was proposed by Moza bint Nasser Al-Missned, the United Nations Representative from Qatar, and supported by all member states.

 

April 7th: World Health Day

World Health Day is a global health awareness day celebrated every year on 7th April. It is sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and other related organizations. The date marks the anniversary of the founding of WHO in 1948. Each year, World Health Day draws attention to a specific health topic of concern to people all over the world.

 

April 22nd International Mother Earth Day

International Mother Earth Day was established in 2009, by the United Nations General Assembly under Resolution. The Resolution was introduced by the State of Bolivia and endorsed by over 50 member states. It recognizes that "the Earth and its ecosystems are our home" and that "it is necessary to promote harmony with nature and the Earth." The term Mother Earth is used because it "reflects the interdependence that exists among human beings, other living species and the planet we all inhabit".

 

April 24th: International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace

The International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace was established by a UN General Assembly resolution on December 12, 2018, as “a means to promote the values of the United Nations and to reaffirm the faith of our peoples in the purposes and principles enshrined in its Charter, to reaffirm the importance and relevance of multilateralism and international law and to advance the common goal of lasting and sustained peace through diplomacy.”
